Heaviest vehicle pulled over a level 100 feet

In this photo of the record holder for the heaviest vehicle pulled over a level 100 feet. The fire truck weighs 57,243kg (126,200lb).
I was torn between this photo and the record holder for the fastest 100 meter hurdle run  wearing swim fins. You can see those two and 12 other new records in this year's edition of the Guinness Book of World Records at The Guardian.

Smallest Helicopter

MATSUMOTO, Japan-- 75-year-old Gennai Yanagisawa, who runs an electronics equipment company in Matsumoto, central Japan, has created a 75kg (165-pound) one-man aircraft which sets the world record for the smallest helicopter.

In this photo released on by Japanese helicopter manufacturing company Gen Corporation, the company employee Yasutoshi Yokoyama flies in the air by GEN H-4, a compact single-seater helicopter developed by Gen Corporation, during its test flight in Matsumoto in central Japan's Nagano Prefecture.

Yanagisawa developed the GEN H-4 helicopter — with rotors, a chair, footrest and handle bar — in the late 1990s.
Yanagisawa's helicopter is the smallest model in the world in terms of weight and its rotor length of 3.9 meters.

The GEN H-4 has two rotors turning in opposite directions to maintain stability, and four engines that enables a 30-minute flight with a top speed of about 56 miles per hour.

The helicopter has two identical rotors that turn in opposite directions making the need for a tail rotor obsolete. Each rotor counteracts the others torque keeping the helicopter free of any unwanted spin.

The entire rotor head is supported on a gimbal, which is slanted towards the direction of travel by the control bar. The pilot can therefore change their direction by shifting their weight.

It has four twin cylinder engines and can remain in the air even if two of the engines of malfunction. However, they have attached a parachute above the mast just in case...

Da Vinci designed what is thought to be the first vertical flight machine, "an aerial screw," in the 1480s, according to Italy's National Museum of Science and Technology.

Vanish playing card in ease

Effect:

The magician spills the deck onto the table.  He picks one of the cards up with a magic handkerchief, says a magic word and poof! the card disappears.

Supplies:

  • a deck of cards (or part of a deck)
  • a toothpick (or a thin popsicle stick)
  • a handkerchief that is not see-through and that has a hem
  • scissors

  • OPTIONAL:  magic puppet

Preparation:

Cut the toothpick so that it's the same width as one of the cards (the width is the shorter side of the card.)  Push the toothpick into the hem of the handkerchief, making sure it won't fall out.

Secret:

Spread the deck of cards out on the table...  You may want to fiddle with this a bit, using a magic puppet, to draw the audience's attention to the cards and the puppet.
Place the handkerchief overtop of the cards with the toothpick hem facing down.  Don't fiddle with this part...  You don't want them to guess that the handkerchief is special.
card trick instructionsWith your thumb and index finger, pick up the handkerchief, holding onto the toothpick (Say something like, "I will now pick up a card").  This will trick the audience into thinking there is a card under the handkerchief.
Pick up the edges of the toothpick so it looks like you’re picking up a card. The red in the diagram represents the toothpick, but it will be invisible to the audience.
Say some magic words, wave a wand or wave your magic puppet over the handkerchief.
Flap it in the air, letting go of the toothpick part and just holding the corner.
Presto!  The "card" has disappeared.

10 Unbelievable Medical Miracles

Surviving A Spike Through the Head

Phineas_GagePerhaps one of the most famous medical miracle stories told to students of neurology is that of Phineas Gage.  In 1848, Gage was the foreman of a construction gang preparing the bed of a new railroad line, when an explosion forced a 3 feet 7 inch long rod through his head.  The rod entered through the man's cheek and exited through the top of his head.
Miraculously, the rod was successfully removed by doctors, and Gage survived.  Unfortunately, he experienced obvious personality changes, and eventually died eleven years later after suffering from increasingly severe seizures.

Man Survives Steel Bar Through Chest

Twenty-two-year-old Supratim Dutta defied all odds when he survived being impaled by a 5 foot long, two inch thick iron bar. Dutta was impaled when his driver lost control of the car he was riding in and smashed into a barricade.

Miraculously, the iron bar missed all vital organs, and surgeons were able to remove it. Dutta was released from the hospital just two weeks later and made a full recovery.
Implanted Electrodes Wake Man After 6 Years
A serious assault left a man in a near-vegetative state for six years, until a medical team inserted electrodes into his brain with miraculous results.  The man, who had previously been unable to swallow, communicate or make coordinated movements of any kind, was suddenly able to talk, feed himself and interact with his family.  The man experienced almost immediate improvement when the electrodes were stimulated, and now they turn on and off every 12 hours to give him a normal sleep-wake cycle.
Implanted_Electrodes
The electrodes were used to stimulate the thalamus, an important region deep within the brain. This form of deep brain stimulation has been used to treat Parkinsons disease, but it had never been used before to treat a patient with this type of brain damage.

Brain With Leaky Veins Fixed with Superglue

17-month-old Ella-Grace Honeyman was born with a rare malformation of the blood vessels in the brain called Vein of Galen Malformation.  The malformation causes high pressures in the vein of Galen, resulting in aneurysms. In Ella-Grace, news reports state that the high pressure caused blood to leak into her brain and resulted in the formation of a potentially fatal aneurysm.
super_glued_brain
The condition is so rare, that the toddler had to be taken first to France, and then to the United States for treatment.  She underwent surgery that plugged the tiny holes in her blood vessels with a type of medical superglue. While she will still need more operations in the future, doctors say Ella-Grace will now be able to live a long and healthy life.
Four armed and legged Lakshmi survives surgery
Lakshmiwithmom_previewWhen a baby girl was born in rural India with four arms and four legs, she was thought to be a gift from God, and was given the name Lakshmi, after the four-armed Hindu goddess of wealth. Doctors found that Lakshmi actually had a twin, which had failed to fully develop, and had fused to her body.
A team of doctors were assembled, and they performed 27 hour surgery to remove the limbs, kidney and spinal cord from her twin. Then they re-oriented the girl's genital system and bladder, and closed her pelvis. Lakshmi made a miraculous recovery, and just three months after her operation, she was able to walk with a walker.

Man Walks Again After Being Chopped in Half

Peng Shulin's body was literally cut in half when he was hit by a lorry over a decade ago. It took a team of 20 medical professionals to save Peng's life, a feat which was a miracle in itself. Unfortunately though, Peng was left bedridden. Then, doctors at the China Rehabilitation Research Center in Beijing came up with a plan to restore Peng's mobility.
bionic_legs
They designed him an eggcup shaped device with two artificial legs attached to it, enabling the determined man to walk again with the aid of a walker.

A First-Time Mother at 70

Mother_at_70Rajo Devi and her husband Bala Ram were married for 50 years before Devi gave birth to their first child, at the age of 70. The couple, who had struggled with the social stigma of infertility for decades,  finally conceived using in vitro fertilization and a technique called intra cytoplasmic sperm injection, which makes it easier to fertilize an egg with poor quality sperm.  Dr. Bishnoi from the Hisar Fertility Centre Treated Devi, and states that special care was taken to prevent a multiple pregnancy, which could have had catastrophic results for both Devi and her baby.  Both mom and baby are healthy, and Devi is currently the oldest woman known to have given birth to their first child.

Miracle Through a Magnet

A car crash left Josh Villa in a vegetative state for three years, until he was virtually jolted out of his coma using a technique called transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS). TMS stimulates the brain using magnetic fields produced by an electromagnetic coil placed on the patient's scalp.
Previously, doctors have used TMS to treat depression, Parkinsons disease, stroke and migraine. The magnet sends a charge to the portion of the brain that works to signal the rest of the brain to wake up. Villa, who was given these treatments as a last resort, awakened after 15 treatment sessions. Unfortunately, after a total of 30 treatments, the sessions were stopped and Villa regressed. He was given more therapy, but is home now. Although he isn't back to normal, he is able to communicate and even express emotions.

Vision Restored Following A Key in the Eye

Nicholas Holderman was only 17-months-old when he became the victim of a freak accident that nearly robbed him of his sight. Nicholas was playing with his two brothers when he fell and landed on a set of keys. His parents were horrified when they realized that one of the keys had been lodged in his eye.
Key_in_eye
Nicholas was rushed to the emergency room, and his eye was immediately operated upon. Miraculously, he only spent only 6 days in the hospital, and just three months later, his vision was completely normal!

Man Survives Being Stabbed Through Head

knife_in_brainIn 1998, 41-year-old Michael Hill answered the door only to have a 8-inch knife stabbed through his skull and into his brain. Michael then walked down the street with the knife still in is head, until he arrived at a friend's home. He was taken to the hospital, and the knife was successfully removed. Hill survived, but his memory has been affected, and he suffers from seizures as a result of the horrifying attack.

Micromax launches Viva A72, Funbook Talk P360

Micromax has launched Viva A72, a 5 inch phablet for Rs 6,999 and a 7 inch SIM calling tablet called Funbook Talk P360 for Rs 7,049. Both Viva A72 and Funbook Talk P 360 are available at Snapdeal.com only as of now.

Micromax A72 is a dual SIM phone with 5 inch display with WVGA (800x480) resolution and is powered by a single core 1 GHz processor coupled with 256MB RAM. It runs on Android 2.3.6 Gingerbread operating system.

                         Micromax-Funbook-Talk-P360

The Micromax Viva A72 features 3 megapixel rear camera and 0.3 megapixel front camera.

A72 doesn't get 3G connectivity but supports 2G, WiFi and Bluetooth. It is also powered by 2000 mAh battery which the company claims provides talk time up to 7 hours and standby time up to 280 hours.

On the other hand, Micromax Funbook Talk P360 tablet comes with 7 inch display and is powered by Cortex-A9 single Core 1.2 GHz processor. It runs on Android 4.1 Jelly Bean operating system and features 2 megapixel rear camera and 0.3 megapixel front camera.

Further, it comes with 1GB RAM with 1.65 GB of internal memory which is further expandable up to 32GB via SD card. Other features in Micromax Funbook Talk P360 are 2G calling, motion sensors, WiFi, Bluetooth, audio-video player and a 3000 mAH battery.

                         Micromax Canvas Viva A 72

While, Micromax Viva A72 for Rs 6,999 looks like a great deal, but it has below par hardware and software features like single core processor, only 256 MB RAM and aging Android Gingerbread operating system. Choice of Android Gingerbread operating system probably comes because of low RAM which would hardly support Android 4.0 or above.

If one can further expand his budget by Rs 1,500 smartphones like Lava Iris 502 priced at Rs 8,500 and Karbonn Smart A111 for Rs 8,799 which support 3G, get minimum of 512MB RAM, better camera and Android 4.0 or later version are much better deal.

On the other hand, by adding Rs 50 more to the price of Micromax Viva A72 one can get Micromax Funbook Talk P360. It gives more RAM, bigger display, latest operating system and almost the same camera, and 50 per cent more battery with 3000 mAh unit and rest of the functions like SIM calling and 2G data access etc, which leaves us wondering about Micromax's pricing strategy.

8 Tips for better sleep

No blue light: Switch off the television and computer, and keep away the cellphone an hour before bedtime. The short waves of blue light may interrupt sleep.

Snooze! 8 Great Health Benefits of Sleep

Avoid naps: Though the occasional 20-minute power nap is a real boost, avoid any shut-eye eight hours prior to bedtime, as that can make falling asleep at night more troublesome.

Save the bed for sleeping: Your bedroom should only be limited for rest and relaxation. Keep the money talk, phone conversations and TV viewing out the door.

Set a routine: Fix hours for when you sleep and wake up. This puts a healthy sleep cycle in place, and allows you to fall asleep quickly each night and sleep well through the night.

No caffeine: Caffeine interferes with deep sleep, so avoid even small amounts found in chocolate and decaf coffee anytime after noon.

Eat light: You know what they say about eating like a pauper at night? Follow it. Prepare light, small meals for the night to get high-quality sleep.

Snooze! 8 Great Health Benefits of Sleep

Stop smoking: If there aren’t enough reasons to kick the habit, here’s another: nicotine acts as a stimulant and can keep from falling asleep and worsen insomnia.

Unwind: Though it may seem self-indulgent at first, fix a downtime routine an hour before bed each night. Take a warm bath, read a book, listen to soothing music and lower the lights to give your day the perfect close.

A regular habit of seven to eight hours of sleep will help you stay active daily and ahead of the pack by keeping serious ailments at bay.

Top 8 health benefits of sleep

Reduces stress: In the case of sleep deficiency, the body’s functions enter a state of high alert, and cause an increase in blood pressure and production of stress hormones. The stress hormones make it harder to sleep and the higher blood pressure amplifies the risk of heart attacks and strokes.

Boosts memory: In the time you’re asleep, the brain processes any new knowledge, organises the skills learned while awake, makes connections between events, feelings and memories, and sensory input. This helps you to process information and perform better.
Snooze! 8 Great Health Benefits of Sleep

Healthier heart: A lack of sleep is often associated with increased blood pressure and cholesterol – factors directly responsible for heart ailments and strokes. Seven to eight hours of sleep will go a long way in promoting cardiovascular health.

Lowers inflammation: One of the most important benefits of sleep is that it helps to keep stress hormone levels in check. This allows the body to alleviate the levels of inflammation, which is known to increase the risk of heart-related diseases, premature aging, arthritis, cancer and diabetes.

Allows body repairs: The cells in the body produce more protein while you’re asleep, which aids the body in recovering from damage caused by stress, ultraviolet radiation, and other harmful exposures.

Snooze! 8 Great Health Benefits of Sleep

Lower risk of depression: Sleep has an impact on several chemicals in the body, including serotonin, which causes depression in people in the event of a deficiency. The right amount of sleep, close to 7 to 8 hours, can prevent the onset of depression by producing enough serotonin.

Weight management: Lack of sleep may lead to an imbalance of the ghrelin and leptin hormones, which are crucial in regulating appetite. Additionally, the same part of the brain that controls sleep also increases metabolism. So to maintain or control weight, it is imperative to get adequate sleep.

Higher alertness levels: It follows logically that a good night’s sleep leads to more energy and alertness the next morning. This prepares the body for a day’s worth of activity and engagement, and increases the likelihood of another good night’s sleep. It’s a good circle to be caught in.

Magic Toothpick Trick

Effect:

The magician shows a pan full of water with five toothpicks in the shape of a pentagon.
The magician takes his magic toothpick and dips it in the center of the pentagon.  The five toothpicks fly apart, breaking the pentagon!
Someone from the audience says...  Oh, that's just what happens when you do that, it's not magic.  The magician arranges the five toothpicks back into a pentagon and hands the person in the audience the magic toothpick.  The person dips it in the center.  Nothing happens.  It really was magic!

Supplies:

  • a tinfoil pan (a pie plate or leftover Chinese food plate work well)
  • water
  • 6 flat wooden toothpicks
  • the magic ingredient:  liquid dishwashing soap

Before the Audience - Preparation:

Dip one of your toothpicks in liquid dishwashing soap.  Set it aside for now.
Make sure your pan is clean.  Rinse it well with water.  Fill it quite full of water (but not so full that you're going to spill it).

In Front of the Audience - Preparation:

>> Arrange the five SOAPLESS toothpicks in the shape of a pentagon.   magic  Make sure the tips of the toothpicks overlap so your pentagon stays together.  This can be a bit of a challenge the first time you do it, so practice arranging the toothpicks at home a few times first and consider arranging them while the audience is seating itself.

>> Now, when the audience is settled, let them look at the pentagon.  They may have to stand to do this or you may want to do the trick on the floor with the audience around you in a U-shape.

>> Tell the audience that you've arranged the toothpicks into a special five sided shape called a pentagon and that you're going to cast a spell on the sixth toothpick to imbue it with some of your magical force so it will be able to break apart the pentagon.  (big words always impress an audience *grin*)

>> Take out the sixth toothpick (the one that was dipped in dish soap) and wave your hand over it while chanting some magical words.  Close your eyes and frown a bit so it looks like you're working on putting your magic into the toothpick.

>>> Words you could chant:   Alaka penta Abraka magic

>> Now, dip the magical toothpick into the center of the pentagon (Make sure you dip the soapy end in the water and try to get it as close to the center of the shape as possible -- the soap shouldn't be visible anymore).  The five toothpicks will fly apart.

>>> If you have a non-believer in the audience, offer to let them try the trick.  Arrange the pentagon in the water again and hand them the magic toothpick.  Let them dip it in the center.  It won't work!

>> If the audience asks you to do the trick a second time, just tell them that it takes awhile to recharge your magical force.  You have to rest before you can put more of it into a toothpick, otherwise you could lose your magic forever!

Secret:

Throughout history, a lot of 'magic' has really been science disguised with a few silly words.  This is one of those tricks.
All things (including water) is made up of tiny things called molecules).  Water molecules like each other and stick together (that's why when a bit of water falls on a table or window, it blobs together in a little droplet).
The surface of the water has a layer of clingy molecules on it -- this layer is called the water's surface tension.  The toothpicks were nice and flat so they were floating on this layer.
water
Remember that we dipped the sixth toothpick in dish soap?  That's the real trick to this trick.  The soap molecules break the surface tension of the water.  This effect spreads out in an ever widening ring (like ripples in the water when you throw a rock in a lake).  The molecules originally holding the toothpicks break apart.  The molecules farther away from where you dipped the toothpick still have their surface tension (for a little longer) so they pull the toothpick toward them.  Of course, eventually the "ripples" of soap hit those molecules too.
soap
Once the soap is in the water, the surface tension won't come back.  That's why the audience member couldn't recreate the trick.  It will only work once and then you have to clean everything up and use new toothpicks to do the trick a second time.  That's also why you have to be careful that your pan is well rinsed before you do the trick.
