Daytona 500 champ Johnson damages car in celebration

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — Jimmie Johnson said he was going for the picture every Daytona 500 winner dreams of: the one with the car sliding across the massive DAYTONA logo on the infield grass.
But Johnson miscalculated his celebration. When he turned off the track to the grass, the right front of his car suddenly dug into the turf and tore up part of his race-winning car.
"The damage was pretty bad, I'm not gonna lie," he said Monday. "...I knew instantly when it grabbed the dirt I had a big problem."
JOHNSON: Daytona 500 win signals return to form
Johnson, speaking at a breakfast after inducting his car into the Daytona 500 tour office — where it will remain for a year — said his burnout "didn't go as planned."
At first, Johnson was worried the damage was similar to Carl Edwards' incident after the 2011 NASCAR All-Star Race, when the driver severely damaged his front end while celebrating in the grass.
"I'm looking at my gauges, and I still had water pressure and water temp," Johnson said. "So I knew the radiator was still in it."
WATCH: Recap of Sunday's 55th Daytona 500

Johnson said he knew there would be conspiracy theories that he damaged the car intentionally. ("I can only imagine," he said.) In 2011, crew chief Chad Knaus was caught on an in-car camera telling Johnson to purposefully crack the back of his car if he won in order to avoid scrutiny.
NASCAR later added extra inspections on the No. 48 car for the remainder of the 2011 season.
There were no such worries this time.
"I just saw (NASCAR president Mike) Helton," Johnson said. "He wasn't overly upset with me, so that was good."
He added: "Luckily, they don't measure heights on the front of the car anymore.

The Hot and the not so Happening

The Hot and the not so Happening

Gadget reviews: HP Envy X2, Panasonic Lumix, HTC Droid DNA and more

PANASONIC LUMIX FZ200
Rs 34,290
Rating: 4/5

FEATURES
>> 25-600 mm lens, 12.1 MP, CMOS sensor

The DMC-FZ200 is an excellent super zoom . You can keep a constant aperture of F2.8, meaning considerable improvement in low light and at maximum zoom. This is because you can choose higher shutter speeds at low ISO settings. The electronic viewfinder is brilliant and the rotating LCD offers great visibility, while the auto mode is very effective. However, it's a little more expensive than other super zooms (albeit with a better lens), images are a tad noisy and there is problem with redeye correction. Read Dpreview.com for an extensive review.

KARBONN A30
Rs 11,900
Rating: 2.5/5

FEATURES
>> 1GHz dual-core processor, 2,500 mAh battery
>> 8 MP rear & 1.3 MP front camera

India now has the world's biggest phone, though if that's a good thing is debatable. The 5.9-inch device might have crossed the line on size and is pretty heavy at about 280 gms. Only a stellar display could have saved it but the 480x800 pixels is disappointing. Despite it being almost pure Android 4.0 (Jelly Bean would have been better), it's got a few too many bloatware. The 1GHz dualcore processor is good enough but RAM details have not been disclosed. The price and dual SIM capabilities are the device's attractions.

HP ENVY X2
Rs 59,990
Rating: 3/5

FEATURES
>> 1.8 GHz Intel Atom Z2760, 2GB RAM
>> 64GB flash memory, 8 MP camera

The Envy is sleek with an aluminium body and is a light tablet (1.5 pounds), while the dock attaches and releases very smoothly. The display (1366x768) was adequate but viewing angles could have been better. Processing was the same as that of a netbook, not slow but not very fast either. Windows 8 was a solid performer as well. Working on it as a tablet was great with fluid manoeuvring. But, it is average on battery life (7 hours as a tablet, 11 hours with the dock) and the keyboard is cramped.

HTC DROID DNA
NA
Rating: 4/5

FEATURES
>> 1.5 GHz quad core Snapdragon S4, 2GB RAM
>> Android 4.1 (Jellybean), 8 MP camera

The Droid is built to last with a polycarbonate back lined with aluminium sides. The powerhouse quad-core engine, combined with Jellybean, makes for a heady product (though gamers might find a few glitches). The USP is, unarguably, the magnificent 5-inch 1080p display with the IPS panel, also known as Super LCD3. You don't have to strain even in direct sunlight. The camera might not add to the Droid's covetousness but it's no deal breaker. It's weak on battery life and you're stuck on memory with no microSD slot.

HUAWEI MEDIAPAD 7 LITE
Rs 13,700
Rating: 2/5

FEATURES
>> 1.4GHz Cortex-A8 processor, 1 GB RAM,
>> 1024x600 display, 3.2 MP rear camera

The Lite has a solid build but and yet feels and looks great (think matte aluminium and white plastic). The best thing about it is the lack of opering system modifications, though it is still running Android 4.0 (ICS) and not Jelly Bean. That's about it, only dampers ahead. Deemed a budget tablet, it runs on a single core processor (perceptible lag), the display is only 1024x600 (poor for any tablet), and battery life and camera are less than stellar. There are better 7-inch devices available for about the same price.

Protect Android Phones with Mobile Security

Apps Designed To Keep Devices Safe and

Protected

Mobile SecurityWith technology constantly innovating mobile phones, consumers become so dependent on these devices from the simplest tasks such as storing notes, taking photos, and sending SMS to the more complicated ones such as paying bills, syncing multi-devices, and controlling household appliances over Wi-Fi technology, it has become a necessity to keep mobile phones protected from unauthorized data access. Losing it is now one of the major threats that owners fear because of a lot of sensitive information that mobile phones are capable of storing.
Android users are in luck because there are more than enough mobile security apps available at the Google Play marketplace. If you are the type who visits the Web without worrying about the consequences it might bring to your device, then you should download one of these mobile security apps if you don’t have one yet. Hint: all of them are trusted developers in the IT industry.
  1. Lookout Mobile Security – Just like most mobile security apps, Lookout Mobile Security scans all files and apps you’ve downloaded on your Android phone. You can also log on to the website to find your phone and it will track it down, sounding off an alarm once the location has been determined. But wait, it gets even better. Anyone who tries to steal your phone and attempts to unlock your device will have his photo and location sent to your email. At $3/mo, you have the option to lock your phone and wipe or transfer the data remotely.
  2. AVG Mobile Antivirus – The mobile version of one of the world’s best free antivirus software is just as impressive as its PC counterpart. Apart from the standard features (track missing phone, scaning apps, etc.) it displays the location on Google Maps once found and wipes the device remotely. Switching between your phone’s internal memory and SD card is also possible and you can terminate apps that slow down your phone. Spend $15 more and you will have tech support to help you get through those technobabble moments.
  3. Trend Micro Mobile Security and Antivirus – The free version of this mobile security app doesn’t offer much except for the Threat Scanner, a standard in other apps that scans downloaded data against viruses. Paying $30 for the premium version may be a bit steep but parents will be more secure knowing that Parental Controls are available to protect minors from adult websites and unwanted callers can be blocked as well.
Other options that you can explore are the Avast! Free Mobile Security, Kaspersky Mobile Security, Norton Mobile Security Lite, and McAfee Antivirus and Security apps. Mobile security has never been more important than today. Losing mobile phones is now one of the major threats that owners fear because of a lot of sensitive information that mobile phones are capable of storing. World's first Bottle Charger prototype

World's first Bottle Charger prototype

The world's first bottle charger is an innovative new generator that harnesses thermal energy from a cup of hot water to create electricity.(patent pending)

While researchers are busy finding newer sources of energy and ways of harvesting it, Ryan Johnstone, an independent inventor based in Nairobi, Kenya, has invented a solution that could help mobile phone users charge their devices with just the power of hot water. Ryan has developed the Bottle Charger, as he likes to call it, an apparatus that utilises the power of hot water to run a small turbine, which in turn produces electric current potent enough to charge small devices.
Explaining its working, Ryan said to The Mobile Indian, "The Bottle Charger works like a small wind turbine. Instead of natural wind currents, the pressurised air is created by expansion and contraction due to the presence and absence of hot water."
This change in air pressure is then used to run a small turbine that sits inside the apparatus and generates electricity for charging mobile devices. The inventor claims that the Bottle Charger creates electricity as long as you have access to hot water of around 100 degrees Celsius. With this the Bottle Charger enables users to charge smaller electronic devices such as mobile phones, MP3 players and so on for 15-30 minutes depending on surrounding temperatures.
The Bottle Charger involves using a 20 litre water jar along with a BUCT (Blackbeard Unidirectional Constant Turbine) module to create electricity. The quality of water does not cause any difference; it can be normal tap water as well.
The project is in its very nascent stage but holds promise. The inventor has taken help of crowd funding website Indiegogo to raise money to make the device better and smaller.

Google Chromebook Pixel laptop: 5 must-know features

Google Chromebook Pixel laptop: 5 must-know features

“With the Pixel, we set out to rethink all elements of a computer in order to design the best laptop possible,” Google said on the release date of its new laptop — the Chromebook Pixel.

The Chromebook Pixel is a homegrown laptop by Google, unlike the previous Chromebook Series which was made by Samsung and Acer.

Chromebook Pixel fills in the other end of the gamut created by Chromebooks; a high-end, powerful machine with impressive hardware. While many would claim that the Pixel combines the lucidity of Windows 8 and the functionality, not to mention the impressive screen that is the Retina Display on the MacBook, the Chromebook Pixel brings something more to the table: a comprehensive integration with the Cloud.
Let’s take a look at some of the features the Chromebook Pixel packs:

Hardware:

Under the hood the Chromebook Pixel is powered by a dual-core 1.8GHz Intel Core i5 processor, 4GB of memory and integrated Intel HD 4000 graphics. With new computing power, the Pixel gets listed on the same page as Windows PCs and Mac. The overhaul marks a major shift from previous Chromebook iterations which ran on ARM and Celeron processors.

Display:

The one feature that puts Google ahead in the game is the new Gorilla Glass-covered multi-touch screen which is 12.85-inch and has a 2560 x 1700 (239 PPI) touchscreen panel. The screen also packs a massive 4.3 million pixels and has 400 nit brightness with 3:2 aspect ratio.
According to the company, this is the highest resolution display they have put in to a laptop. With such massive specs, the battery, rated as 59WHr, will surely take the toll, though Google claims a five-hour runtime of the Pixel.

Operating System:

Announced in July 2009, Chrome OS is an operating system designed to work exclusively with web applications. The user interface of the system only has a browser with a media player and a file manager. All the documents and applications are stored and based in the Cloud.

Cloud Storage:
In the Chromebook Pixel, the local solid-state storage is 32GB and 64GB SSD, however; consumers can get one terabyte of free cloud storage space with Google's Drive service for three years.
According to Google, the Chromebook Pixel “is designed especially for power users who have fully embraced the cloud."

Price:

The basic Wi-Fi version of the laptop will retail for USD 1,299 in the US. In April, Google will launch a model with built-in LTE with a price of USD 1,449.
The Wi-Fi model will come with 32GB of storage and has hit the shelves for USD 1,299 in the United States and £1,049 in the UK. The LTE model of the Pixel will have 64GB of storage and will be priced at USD 1,449.The LTE version will be shipped in early April.

5 Linux Distros You Should Watch Out For in 2013

5 Linux Distros You Should Watch Out For in 2013

1. ROSA

Desktop Environment(s): KDE
DistroWatch Rank (last 30 days): 14
Version Tested: ROSA Desktop Fresh 2012
distros-ROSA
While the commercially driven Mandriva has been struggling over the past few years, two new Mandriva-based distros have been on the rise. ROSA is one of them. It is a general-purpose distro from Russia that uses a customized take on KDE and many other modifications to improve the end-user experience. It is becoming known for both its “Desktop Fresh” edition and its server edition, ROSA Enterprise Linux Server, which is based on Red Hat rather than Mandriva.
ROSA 2012, released in December, brings back much of the code of Mandriva 2011. It has a friendly, colorful theme with chunky icons, making it appealing to those who care about aesthetics in a desktop. One of its interesting customizations of KDE is the large, GNOME-like pop-up menu shown in the screenshot above. The menu has three tabs, “Welcome,” “Applications,” and “TimeFrame.” TimeFrame lets you log into your social networks, though it appears to only support two right now.
distros-ROSA-timeframe
I managed to log in to Facebook with TimeFrame, but the Facebook app itself wouldn’t load. I love the idea, though; if ROSA added some more social networks and fixed the bugs, this would be a great feature.

2. Mageia

Desktop Environment(s): KDE, GNOME
DistroWatch Rank (last 30 days): 2
Version Tested: Mageia 3 Beta 1 KDE
distros-mageia
Mageia is the other Mandriva fork that’s been doing great – really great, in fact. It has already surpassed Ubuntu in popularity on DistroWatch. Mageia is essentially a non-profit, community-driven variation of Mandriva. Mageia 2 is the stable version, but I decided to test the beta for Mageia 3.
I was pleased to see that Mageia provides more advanced graphics and audio applications than most general-purpose distros, including GIMP and Ardour. The look and feel is fairly typical of KDE’s Oxygen. Mageia features its own Control Center in addition to the standard KDE System Settings.

3. Manjaro

Desktop Environment(s): Xfce, KDE, Cinnamon, MATE
DistroWatch Rank (last 30 days): 16
Version Tested: Manjaro 0.83 Xfce
distros-manjaro
Manjaro is an Arch-based, desktop-oriented distribution that aims to make Arch more approachable while operating under the K.I.S.S. (Keep It Simple, Stupid) principle. Manjaro is light and fast and 100% compatible with Arch, though Manjaro also uses its own repository called BoxIt.
I tried the Xfce edition, which is the most widely used, and my experience was great. The slick Greenbird theme goes well with the Faenza icon set, and the green desktop colors are pleasing to the eye. Manjaro comes with two graphical applications for browsing packages. While it doesn’t provide an office suite, it does come with an installer for LibreOffice.

4. Sabayon

Desktop Environment(s): Xfce, KDE, MATE, LXDE, E17, Awesome
DistroWatch Rank (last 30 days): 27
Version Tested: Sabayon 10 Xfce
distros-sabayon
Like Manjaro, Sabayon‘s goal is to create a user-friendly distro on top of an advanced distro’s base. In this case, Sabayon is based on Gentoo, with the main difference, other than the fact that Sabayon has an installer, being that Sabayon uses the binary package manager Entropy to compile all packages from source instead of the portage Package Manger. You can use portage in Sabayon too, but mixing portage and Entropy is not recommended unless you’re sure you know what you’re doing.
Sabayon includes a fast graphical frontend for Entropy called Rigo Application Browser. You can also install packages with the equo command, but Rigo is a nice addition that makes the distro more beginner-friendly. I have used Sabayon for years and am increasingly impressed with every release.

5. Bodhi

Desktop Environment(s): E17
DistroWatch Rank (last 30 days): 25
Version Tested: Bodhi 2.1.0
distros-bodhi
Bodhi is a lightweight, minimal desktop distro known as “The Enlightened Linux Distribution” because it runs the Enlightenment (E17) desktop environment. It is based on Ubuntu. If you haven’t tried E17 before, I highly recommend giving it a go with Bodhi. Bodhi has streamlined the experience very nicely. When you first boot up into the live edition, you’ll get a dialog asking you to choose a theme:
distros-bodhi-01
Bodhi is quite stable, as each release is based on a corresponding LTS (long-term support) Ubuntu release. The latest, Bodhi 2.1.0, is based on Ubuntu 12.04. It doesn’t come with a whole lot of preinstalled software; rather, Bodhi aims to give the user control over installing the software they want. For this reason, it might not be the best choice for someone who has never used Linux before, but for other use cases, Bodhi is a fine choice.

Conclusion

There are so many interesting, nascent Linux distros that it would be impossible to cover all of the best ones in a short article like this. I can at least testify that I played around with each of the distros described here and found them all very solid. I don’t necessarily expect any of them to surpass Mint in popularity in 2013, but do keep an eye on them. ROSA, Mageia, Manjaro, Sabayon, and Bodhi are all in active development and steadily improving.
